Episode Review Game of Thrones 7.4 The Spoils of War

Remember how I said last weeks episode was my favorite of the season? Well, I have a new favorite and it’s this week’s episode and it’s basically all because of the final scene again, but the episode was still awesome over all. But let’s go back and start at the beginning.

Jamie paid Bronn but was all pissed off because of his conversation with Grandma before she died last week. They pack up the gold meant for the Iron Bank and send it off. There’s some doubt about whether or not all of the gold got there because of the ending where it looks like the dragons burn it all but we’ll see how much actually got to King’s Landing tomorrow.

Littlefinger gave Bran the dagger that started the whole series and Bran lets him know in no uncertain terms that he’s on to his bullshit, (“chaos is a ladder,” is a Littlefinger soliloquy from Season 3 in case you forgot). Then Bran talks with Meera Reed and blows her off and let’s her leave. He’s acting like Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen, who basically is a superhero who abandons Earth because he knows all about Fate and whatever and so he doesn’t care about humanity as though he is a part of it anymore. In other words remember the Three Eyed Raven saying it’s beautiful beneath the sea but if you stay too long you’ll drown? I think Bran drowned and there’s no coming back from it.

Arya arrived at Winterfell and in a scene that references the first season, (where Arya arrives at the gates of King’s Landing and has to make the guards believe who she is), enters the castle and meets Sansa for the first time since season one in the crypts before their father’s tomb. Remember the last time these two had a scene together Ned Stark lost his head. Sansa and Arya get to see how each other has changed through the course of the episode. She watches as Arya and Brienne spar in the courtyard, and Arya at the very least holds her own. I love Sansa’s reaction to watching this but the best is Littlefinger’s face. It seems like Arya is going to fucking murder him and it’s been a long time coming.

So I saw this weird thing from Screen Junkies about this scene. They don’t believe it either but I clicked it so I’m letting you guys click it if you want. There’s a weird fan theory floating around the Internet, apparently, that this cloaked figure in the background of Arya vs Brienne is Lady Stoneheart, (AKA Caitlyn Stark zombie) but let’s be clear there’s about 0% chance that is. They already showed Berric Dondarrion alive and he’s the one who brought her back from the dead, so stop saying she’s coming, she’s not.

Bran and Arya and Sansa try and figure out what Littlefinger and Bran gives Arya the Valyarian Steel knife that remember can kill White Walkers.

Jon and Dany flirted in a cave of dragon glass and looked at some cool cave drawings. I know she’s his aunt but personally I would totally bend the knee for Daenyrs Targaryen, she is a dragon goddess, but she has to wear the wig, otherwise it doesn’t work. Missandei tried to play matchmaker a bit and this whole thing is going to be weird when remember we find out she’s his aunt.

Dany hears about the Tyrell castle of Highgarden being taken and the death of Grandma Tyrell and she wants to storm King’s Landing with fire and blood, which unfortunately sounded very similar to the news this week. Jon talks her out of it. There was some controversy over whether or not Dany took his advice, but she did. She didn’t go for King’s Landing. She fought Jamie in the field and caused only soldier casualties rather than attacking the capital and burning thousands to death.

And now the battle!

It is fucking epic. There is no other words for it. We saw a dragon used in battle against foot soldiers. We saw Jamie and Bronn going against Dany and Tyrion. We saw a dragon brought down with a giant cross bow. We saw main characters, Point of View characters pitted against each other and on the verge of killing each other. I will gush and gush about how awesome this scene is. It showcases everything that GoT is and what is can be and we still have three episodes left of this season. Madness. Absolute madness and I love it.

Tomorrow we should be seeing a White Walker scene. The episode is titled “Eastwatch,” which refers to the castle where Tormund and the Wildlings and the Hound and the Brotherhood Without Banners is going to along the Wall. So we could get White Walkers in Westeros in the very next episode. After seven and a half seasons of waiting the Army of the Dead will be here. Maybe they can hold them off, somehow, doubtful, but possible. Maybe the lord of Westeros will believe when the enemy is at the gates but maybe not. Everyone’s survival depends upon coming together and we’ll see if they can do it or in true GoT fashion everyone will die…

Review of 7.5 “Eastwatch,” next week…
